What scaling and polishing do
Plaque that is not removed hardens into calculus, or tartar, which bonds to the tooth surface and cannot be brushed away. Scaling removes those deposits from the tooth surfaces and from around the gum line. Polishing then smooths the surfaces, which slows how quickly deposits build up again.
It is a cleaning procedure, not a whitening one. Teeth often look brighter afterwards because surface staining comes away with the deposits, but the natural shade of the tooth itself is unchanged.
Why it is about gums, not just appearance
Deposits at and below the gum line are what keep gum tissue inflamed. That inflammation is the beginning of gum disease, and it is the part that can be reversed. Removing the deposits addresses the cause rather than the symptom.
This is also why an examination accompanies the cleaning here. If there are signs that inflammation has already gone deeper, that changes what is needed — a routine clean would not be enough, and knowing that early matters.
How often it is needed
That varies genuinely between people. It depends on how quickly you form deposits, the condition of your gums, whether you smoke, and how thoroughly you clean at home. Some people are advised every six months; some with active gum problems are placed on shorter recall.
Rather than a fixed rule, you are given an interval based on what your own examination shows.

No. Scaling removes deposits and surface staining, which often makes teeth look brighter, but it does not change the natural shade of the tooth. It is a cleaning procedure rather than a whitening one.

Can scaling be done if my gums bleed?
Bleeding gums are usually a sign of the inflammation that scaling is meant to address. It is examined first, because bleeding can also indicate that the condition has gone deeper and needs more than a routine clean.
