What pyorrhea and gum disease mean

Pyorrhea is the term still widely used in India for advanced gum disease, known clinically as periodontitis. It begins as gingivitis, an inflammation of the gums caused by bacterial deposits at the gum line. At that stage it is confined to the gums.

Left untreated, the inflammation can extend deeper and affect the bone and fibres that hold the teeth in place. As that support is lost, gums may recede, pockets form between gum and tooth, and teeth can loosen. Bone that has already been lost does not simply grow back, which is why the stage at which treatment begins matters a great deal.

Bleeding gums are commonly dismissed as normal or as a brushing problem. They are the most frequent early sign of gum disease, and the one most often ignored until the condition is further along.

How treatment is approached

Treatment begins with an examination to establish how far the condition has progressed, including measuring the depth of the pockets around the teeth and taking radiographs where needed to see the level of the supporting bone.

Care is then planned according to that stage and extent. It generally starts with thorough professional cleaning of the deposits above and below the gum line, and may involve periodontal therapy for the deeper tissues where the condition warrants it. Because gum disease can recur, treatment is usually followed by review visits at intervals, along with guidance on cleaning at home — which is what determines whether the result holds.

Why gum health is worth treating early

The tissues around the teeth are what keep them anchored. Once support has been lost, treatment is aimed at stopping further loss and keeping what remains, rather than restoring what has gone. Earlier assessment means more of the original support is still there to preserve.
