Restoring a missing tooth
Dental Implants in Udaipur
A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth, giving a fixed replacement rather than one that is removed for cleaning. Whether it suits you depends on the bone and gum tissue at the site, which is why assessment comes first.
What an implant is
An implant is a small post placed into the jawbone in the position of the missing tooth root. Over a period of healing, bone forms around it and holds it in place. A replacement tooth is then fitted onto it. The result is fixed — it is not taken out at night.
That distinguishes it from a removable denture, and from a bridge, which is supported by preparing the teeth on either side of the gap. An implant stands on its own and leaves the neighbouring teeth untouched.
Why assessment comes before anything else
An implant relies on the bone that holds it and the gum tissue around it. Where a tooth has been missing for some time, the bone at that site may have reduced. Where gum disease is present or has been active, that has to be addressed first — the tissues that fail around a natural tooth will not reliably support an implant either.
This is assessed clinically and with radiographs. It is also why having a periodontist involved matters for implant work: the health of the supporting tissues is precisely their field.
What the process involves
Broadly: an assessment and plan, placement of the implant, a healing period during which bone integrates with it, and then fitting of the replacement tooth. The number of visits and the time between them depends on the individual case and is explained to you as part of the plan.
No timeline or outcome can honestly be promised in advance of an examination. What can be said is what the steps are and what each one depends on.
Alternatives worth discussing
An implant is one way to deal with a missing tooth, not the only one. Bridges and removable partial dentures remain appropriate in some situations, and doing nothing is occasionally a reasonable choice depending on which tooth is missing and what else is happening in the mouth. A consultation should leave you understanding the options rather than being pointed at one.
Questions patients ask
Can anyone have a dental implant?
Not in every case. It depends on the amount and quality of bone at the site and the health of the gums, along with general health factors. This is established by clinical examination and radiographs before treatment is planned.
Do I need my gum disease treated first?
Where gum disease is present, it is addressed before implant treatment. Implants depend on healthy supporting tissue, and active gum disease undermines that.
